Can I Donate/dispose Of My Ex Husbands Property He Left At My House?

Thanks everyone for your advice and kind words and tough love. I have an appointment with base legal (I’m military, he’s civilian) later this week to see if they can offer any insight. I did give him the options to either take over the lease (already talked to the storage unit company, they’re sending him the instructions) or get his stuff out by the end of 2025). If I remember, I’ll come back and update in case any other North Dakotans run into a similar issue ????

My ex and I split up 3 years ago (divorce was finalized in Summer of 2023). He’s from the east coast so I offered to store the belongings he couldn’t bring with him, as he was flying back home. He said he would come back for his stuff that summer (we split in late fall) when the traveling conditions were better.

He wound up bouncing around a few states, but now lives only one state away from me. He reached out in August of this year stating that he would come get his things around the end of September. I moved his things into a storage unit so that he can pick them up without having to have contact with me (he said some really horrible things to be when I asked for a divorce, and I never want to be in his presence again).

He kindly paid me for the deposit and first months rent of the storage unit via venmo. I asked that he have his things out by November.

It’s now mid November and he still hasn’t gotten his stuff. I reached out to him, he had an excuse for why he hasn’t gotten his stuff. I don’t mind paying for the storage unit, it’s not about the money. It’s the fact that it’s another thing I have to keep track of, and a reason for him to have contact with me.

At what point can I donate or throw away his stuff? Is there a legal process for this? I just don’t want to create another sticky legal situation.
