Being Pursued For Rent That We Paid Without Lease

Just gonna dive right in. In 2021 friend moved into a rental house. Two year lease was signed that expired in October 2023. Sometime during those two years the property management company sent out an email stating there would no longer be an online rent payment option, you now had to drive to the landlord’s bank and deposit the money there.

This system was a hassle but worked, often led to late payment due to work scheduling clashing with banking hours but aside from the notice about banking the property management company never reached out again ever. It was pulling teeth to get them to respond, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

October 2023 comes and there is no communication to or from the management company. I am now living with friend in aforementioned rental and we continue living there. Flash forward to August 2025, the homeowner??? Not sure where the management company is, sends out an eviction notice stating we owe $5000+ on unpaid rent. The rent WAS PAID, honest to god I was there every single time. However, the process at the bank did seem a bit confusing for the tellers. We no longer have the receipts. They’re claiming that they will pursue legal action should they not receive $5000+ by December 1st 2025 however we were off lease for two years at that point.

Do they even have a leg to stand on here?? Should I be worried?
