Apartment Debt Of 7k Came Out Of Nowhere

Hello bare with me I’m not the greatest at typing at all

I about 2 months ago found out have a 7K debt shared with my old roommates back in 2023 we left the apartment in 2024 and got a house that same year

Now me and 1 of the roommates went to get said house so this is how the start of the story comes along - the 3rd roommate reached out about 2 months ago asking if I knew about this said debt I had no clue and he showed me the documents

That apartment said we essentially “vacated” and didn’t pay so now we have this debt in our collections and obviously no one will rent me out an apartment

I need help figuring out what I should exactly be doing because this is all just so infuriating and we did the right process

We like morons forgot to tell them we would be leaving before the 60 day notice so we were forced to pay 3K to break the contract and just leave which is what we did currently we sent out letters to the credit union so they can track the where the money went but that’s the issue - we had to mail them in 2025? And it would take 8-12 weeks to come back? Right now I’m currently couch surfing with some good friends but bc of this it’s really tanked my mental and I feel like such a burden and loser here

Anyways I really would appreciate any advice bc I can afford to be alone but I feel stuck
