Amex Filed A Lawsuit Against Me For A Business Account I Never Opened – I Don’t Live In The Us Anymore. What Can I Do?
Hey everyone, (did this with the help of AI)
I could really use some advice.
I lived in the US for about a year, then moved back to Europe. Recently, I got a notification saying I have a delinquent American Express business account with around $12,000 on it. The problem is — I never opened that account.
I contacted Amex right away and sent them a bunch of proof showing that, by the time this account was opened and used, I was already back in Europe (passport stamps, proof of residence, etc.).
Now I just found out they’ve apparently filed a suit in Superior Court. I don’t even live in the US anymore, so I have no idea what happens next or what I’m supposed to do.
Can anyone explain: • What I can expect from this kind of lawsuit? • Whether I need to respond even though I’m abroad? • How to handle this while living in Europe (I don’t have a US address anymore)? • Should I hire a US attorney, or can I resolve this through Amex directly?
It’s really stressful to think I might have to deal with a court case for something I didn’t even do, especially when I’m not in the country.
Any guidance or similar experiences would be super appreciated.
Location: California and Germany
Thanks in advance.
