A Car Hit My Horse And Now They’re Calling Me Demanding Money

Location: Kentucky

Long story short, we had a pony get out of our pasture and wander across the road into a field where he was grazing. We had a Good Samaritan stop and knock on our door to let us know. Before we could get to him, the gentleman tried to help get him across the road but as soon as he got into the roadway, there was a car that came down the road. He flashed his lights and tried to wave the car down but they never even slowed down. He was killed instantly and they received significant damage to their vehicle. It was still drivable but definitely damaged. Today, I got a phone call from them (I believe they got my information from the officer) demanding I pay them $5k for their vehicle. I have no idea what their vehicle is worth or the damage caused. I told them they needed to go through their insurance company first and go from there (I’m not sure of the appropriate route). They threatened to sue me for a lot more money if I didn’t settle. As upset as I was, I continuously told them to go through their insurance company. For some additional context: This did not happen on my property (about 1/4 mile away). Can anyone provide any advice on what I may be liable for? Should I go ahead and get an attorney? Thank you in advance. ETA: When the person contacted me, I repeatedly told them to go through their insurance company and their insurance company would contact me if they needed anything. I was told “they told me I needed to file it with your insurance - not through them.” Is this normal? I have a strange suspicion they either dont have insurance or their insurance is saying they’re at fault. ETA 2: Thank you everyone for the suggestions and advice. I greatly appreciate it. I especially appreciate those who have given words on the loss. I will admit that is the hardest part and it’s been a very emotional time. Thank you all.
