Skoda Enyaq Coupé Vrs Conquers Kenya’s Rift Valley In Extreme Ev Test




Skoda Auto has once again put electric mobility to the test—this time in one of the most remote and historically significant places on Earth. In a bold expedition, the all-electric Skoda Enyaq Coupé vRS journeyed deep into northern Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, proving that EV capability extends far beyond urban roads and charging networks.
The Great Rift Valley, often called the cradle of humankind, offers one of the richest records of early human evolution. Around Lake Turkana—the world’s largest permanent desert lake—scientists have uncovered fossil evidence spanning millions of years.
During the expedition, the team collaborated with researchers from the Turkana Basin Institute, founded by renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey. The journey also took in striking locations such as Eliye Springs, the Waddach Pyramids, and the vast Natong’obong sand dunes, offering a unique blend of science, culture, and extreme terrain.
A Production EV in Extreme Conditions
What makes this journey particularly impressive is that the Enyaq Coupé vRS remained largely unchanged from factory specification. Aside from all-terrain tyres, the vehicle retained its standard setup:
– Dual-motor all-wheel drive producing 340 PS
– 84 kWh battery pack
– WLTP range of up to 344 miles
Across more than 300 miles of mixed terrain—including sand, dirt tracks, and tarmac—the Enyaq handled temperatures nearing 40°C with ease. Instant torque and all-wheel drive ensured traction on loose surfaces, while Dynamic Chassis Control helped smooth out rough tracks.
Inside, the climate-controlled cabin provided a comfortable refuge from the harsh environment, reinforcing the model’s practicality even in extreme conditions.
Charging Without Infrastructure
One of the biggest challenges in remote EV travel is charging—and northern Kenya offers virtually no public charging infrastructure. Yet the Enyaq Coupé vRS adapted seamlessly.
Using a standard three-phase power supply—commonly found in workshops—paired with a portable charging adaptor, the vehicle charged at up to 11 kW. This flexible solution delivered enough range for long daily drives, highlighting how EVs can operate effectively even far from established charging networks.
Back in more developed regions, the Enyaq supports DC fast charging up to 185 kW, enabling a 10–80% charge in around 26 minutes.
Technology Meets Real-World Driving
The expedition also showcased the Enyaq’s advanced driver assistance systems in unpredictable conditions. Features like Travel Assist integrate multiple technologies—including adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and traffic jam assist—to enhance safety and ease of driving.
Swarm data capabilities allow the system to detect and warn about hazards such as damaged or slippery roads, a valuable feature in environments where conditions can change rapidly.
Connectivity via the MySkoda app adds further convenience, including Remote Park Assist, enabling the vehicle to handle complex manoeuvres while the driver supervises externally.
From Human Evolution to Electric Evolution
This journey wasn’t just about testing an EV—it was about connecting past and future. The Enyaq travelled near sites where some of the oldest stone tools were discovered, as well as the location of the famous “Turkana Boy,” a 1.6-million-year-old Homo erectus skeleton that reshaped our understanding of early humans.
By traversing this historic landscape in a modern electric vehicle, Skoda draws a powerful parallel between humanity’s evolution and the ongoing transformation of mobility.
The Bigger Picture
This Kenyan expedition is part of a broader series of Enyaq adventures designed to demonstrate real-world EV capability. Previous milestones include a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous vehicle drift on ice and a long-distance journey to the edge of the Sahara.
Together, these achievements reinforce a clear message: electric vehicles are no longer limited to city commutes—they’re ready for the world’s toughest environments.
