Road To Yosemite National Park Closes Due To Rockslide: What To Know

A main entrance to Yosemite Park in California is closed due to a rockslide, and motorists are asked to take alternate routes, according to officials.
It isn't unusual for roads to close at Yosemite Park around winter time because of snowfall, but 2 miles of El Portal Road, a continuation of Highway 140 and one of the main entrances into the park, closed on Tuesday due to a rock slide, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
The SR-140 closure is located between Midpines and El Portal. As of Wednesday, the road was closed 6.5 miles east to 11 miles east of Briceburg, according to California's Department of Transportation.
Motorists are asked to enter Yosemite through Highways 41 or 120 as the affected area remains closed. Tires are required to have chains on them while driving through the alternate routes, NPS stated.
The following roads at Yosemite are closed, according to NPS:
- El Portal Road: Closed due to rockslide.
- Tioga Road: Closed for the season due to snow, usually reopens in May.
- Glacier Point Road: Closed for the season, usually reopens in May.
- Mariposa Grove Road: Closed for the season, usually reopens in April.
When the roads reopen also depends on weather conditions.
