Munich Airport Inaugurates Bavaria’s Largest Electric Vehicle Charging Park

Munich Airport has reached a new milestone in climate protection with the opening of Bavaria’s largest charging park for electric vehicles. Located in parking garage P44 opposite the LabCampus innovation hub, the facility features 275 charging points, making it one of Germany’s largest public charging parks.
The inauguration was attended by Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder, Finance Minister Albert Füracker, and Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers, underscoring the importance of the project for Bavaria’s mobility and sustainability agenda.
Solar-powered infrastructure
The charging park integrates renewable energy from photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of parking garages P43 and P44. A total of 7,216 PV modules deliver a combined peak output of three megawatts, equivalent to the energy demand of 1,000 households. Munich Airport has invested 5.2 million euros in the project, collaborating with regional companies to deliver the infrastructure.
Passengers and visitors can access 138 charging stations on Level 4 of P44, each with a nominal output of 11 kW and a maximum of 22 kW, ensuring convenient and sustainable charging options.
Strategic role in e-mobility
Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder said: “Munich Airport is our gateway to the world and also a gateway to e-mobility. Bavaria is continuing to massively expand e-mobility and renewable energies. We are already the German federal state with the most electric cars and the most charging points. By 2030, we aim to triple the number of charging points. Furthermore, we have introduced free parking for electric cars. We promote state-of-the-art drive systems and are fans of e-mobility – but with an open approach to technology and without rigid bans. Munich Airport is playing a pioneering role with its e-charging park.”

The Finance Minister and Chairman of the Munich Airport Supervisory Board, Albert Füracker, stated: “With today’s commissioning of the charging park for electric cars and the three-megawatt PV system, we are sending a clear signal for climate protection. The project shows that Munich Airport is not only Bavaria’s gateway to the world, but also a strong driver of innovation in the state. Munich Airport is setting new standards in the use of sustainable infrastructure and demonstrating that Bavaria is an attractive and sustainable business location that serves as a role model.”
Commitment to NetZero 2035
Munich Airport already operates over 1,140 charging points for public use and airport vehicles. Current PV capacity of seven megawatts is set to expand to 50 megawatts by 2030. These initiatives form part of the airport’s NetZero 2035 Strategy, which commits to eliminating climate-damaging CO2 emissions within a decade by transforming both on-site operations and third-party emissions from airport access and travel.
Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers stated: “Parking spaces with charging facilities for electric vehicles are a basic requirement for sustainable mobility on the campus. The creation of the charging park is therefore an important part of Munich Airport’s climate protection strategy. It allows us to link various sectors at our airport – namely energy generation, mobility, and the power grid infrastructure. In this respect, this project serves as a model and blueprint for further construction projects across the entire campus.”
With this project, Munich Airport reinforces its role as both a global gateway and a driver of sustainable innovation, setting a benchmark for European aviation infrastructure.
