Aribnb breaks down the hottest travel trends this spring break
Airbnb has revealed the most popular spring travel destinations and the reasoning behind the surge.
  • The FBI advises travelers to be cautious during spring break, especially when traveling abroad.
  • Travelers should consult the State Department's travel advisories and be aware of their surroundings.
  • Travelers should establish emergency contacts and avoid traveling alone at night.

The FBI's Los Angeles field office is warning Americans to travel with caution this spring break, especially if they are planning a trip abroad.

“Whether it’s families looking to escape the final throes of winter or a college student seeking a brief respite from the rigors of academic life, know that the risks are there,” FBI Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis said in a statement. “Maintain vigilance throughout your travels and be prepared to contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate should the need arise.”

According to the FBI, any traveler considering heading abroad this spring should first consult the State Department's travel advisories for a general risk assessment.

Beyond that, the FBI offered general safety advice for travelers, regardless of their destination:

  • Establish points of contact for your family to reference in the event of an emergency.
  • Avoid traveling alone, especially after dark. Be conscious of your surroundings and avoid areas you believe may put your personal safety at risk.
  • Use only authorized taxis or shuttles. Passengers have been robbed or kidnapped when using taxis.
  • Avoid actions that are illegal, improper or indiscreet. Avoid offers of sexual companionship; they may lead to a room raid, photography and blackmail.
  • Evade criminals by being aware of your surroundings and alert to the possibility of surveillance. Take mental notes of anyone following you and promptly report it to the appropriate security officials.
  • Beware of new acquaintances who probe for information about you or who attempt to get you involved in what could become a compromising situation.

The FBI's tips come as universities are also warning students of risks this spring. For international students, faculty and staff, some colleges have advised avoiding trips abroad. As the Trump administration tightens its stance on immigration, university officials are wary that foreign passport holders could risk having their visas revoked.
