Having your license or ID stolen can cause a major headache. It’s even worse if it happens when you’re traveling or about to take off on a trip.
The first thing you should do when you realize you’ve lost or misplaced your license is not to panic. It's not uncommon, and thanks to modern technology, it’s super fast and easy to get a replacement and a temporary placeholder until the new card arrives. Plus, it doesn't even require a trip to the DMV and can be done anytime and from anywhere.

See what solutions your state's Department of Drivers Services (DDS) offers. Many allow you to order a replacement online using the DDS 2 GO app or in person.
If you’re traveling, replacing it online is the easiest and fastest option; plus, there aren’t any lines! You may need to create an online account. Once you have one and log in and follow the instructions. It will likely take you through a few screens of questions before inviting you to pay the fee and get a new card in the mail. Some restrictions may apply, so make sure to read all of the details regarding the requirements to replace it online.
No, the TSA no longer accepts temporary licenses as valid forms of identification. However, some TSA checkpoints allow you to use the mobile driver’s license on your phone as a valid form of identification. You do need your physical license to add the digital copy to your virtual wallet, so this needs to be done ahead of time.
As of May 7, 2025, any state-issued license or ID card presented to the agency ahead of your flight needs to be REAL ID compliant. Otherwise, you need to bring an alternative form of government-issued identification, such as a passport, traveler card, permanent resident card or Enhanced Tribal Cards. REAL ID-compliant cards have a marking in the upper right-hand corner of the front side of the card. For most state-issued IDs, it will appear as either a gold or black star. On IDs issued in California, it may appear in the form of a bear with a star.

However, if you have a digital copy of your license on your smartphone wallet, this may not be considered a valid replacement for your physical card when driving.
