Atech, a company of the Embraer Group, has signed a contract with Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), South Africa’s state-owned air navigation service provider, to replace the country’s current Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) system. The new solution will be installed at the main Air Traffic Control (ATC) Center at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and will include a disaster recovery center as well as a training and simulation environment for controllers.

South Africa manages approximately 283,000 flights per year, connecting more than 20 domestic and 35 international destinations. The new ATFM system will strengthen airspace planning and coordination by balancing scheduled flights with available airport and sector capacity. This will enable more accurate responses to weather, construction, and operational restrictions, reducing delays while enhancing predictability and operational safety.

“This new contract with ATNS reinforces our international expansion strategy and Atech’s commitment to delivering high-impact air traffic management solutions. The new system will result in a more efficient, resilient, and predictable operational environment, delivering tangible benefits for passengers, airlines, airports, and improving the competitiveness of South Africa’s civil aviation system,” said Rodrigo Persico, CEO of Atech.

The new system is aligned with ICAO guidelines (Doc 9971) and incorporates demand-capacity balancing (DCB) and collaborative decision-making (CDM) tools. Key features include:

  • Airport slot management for advanced scheduling coordination with airlines.
  • Real-time dashboards with operational monitoring and post-analysis KPIs.
  • Cross-border ATFM coordination with neighboring FIRs for regional integration.
  • Integrated Flight Plan System (IFPS) aligned with EUROCONTROL standards.
  • Airspace Management and Coordination System (AMCS) for Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA).
  • UTM Flow Management (UFTM) for unmanned traffic integration.

The contract is set to run for two ears, with completion expected in Q3 2027, marking a significant step toward modernizing South Africa’s air traffic management infrastructure.
