When I travel I treat myself to a spa treatment or wellness experience as often as I can. Sometimes this might be something as simple as sitting in a sauna to reduce stress and soothe my aching muscles. On other occasions, I might splurge on a massage. On a recent trip to Orlando, Florida, I indulged in my first-ever visit to a beer spa.

Beer spas are nothing new. The concept of bathing in hops has existed for centuries, especially in the Czech Republic, where the first modern beer spa opened in Prague in 1981. The concept is still relatively new to the U.S., but beer spas have begun to pop up within the past decade.

What is a beer spa?

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked into My Beer Spa in Orlando. Would I submerge myself in a giant vat of sticky beer? It turns out the answer is no. Beer is crafted from water, hops, yeast, and malted grain (usually barley). As luck would have it, these components also benefit your skin. Hops is packed with antioxidants that fight inflammation, yeast contains vitamin B and amino acids that pamper and hydrate the skin, and barley has antioxidants and amino acids that boost collagen production. At beer spas, these ingredients are added to thermal baths for a soothing soak.

Although no two beer spas are the same, amenities might include private lounge areas, infrared saunas, and zero-gravity massage chairs. Beer spas usually include complimentary beer as part of the experience — or it's available for purchase. Some beer spas also offer wine and other libations.
