Fitness On Demand explains how creating a seamless experience — both in gym and on the go — delivers operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction

Fitness On Demand is filling in the white space of the gym and fitness studio experience. There’s a new appreciation for color and connectivity, and in 2026, those who deliver it will separate themselves from the pack.

“Members no longer differentiate between ‘in-gym’ and ‘digital’ fitness,” said Todd Wiginton, Fitness On Demand’s Senior Director of Operations. “They expect one continuous experience that follows them across environments; from in-club screens and guided functional zones to mobile apps, wearables, recovery stations and at-home sessions.”

With strong tailwinds behind it — from wearables normalizing real-time performance data, to social media encouraging members to share and celebrate progress, to the growing emphasis on recovery — this demand isn’t a passing trend. It’s a sustained shift promising to shape the industry for years to come.

“Together, these forces are driving a new expectation: personalization, continuity and measurable feedback across every touchpoint,” Wiginton went on. “The future of engagement is omnichannel, insight-driven and frictionless. The gym is no longer a destination. It’s the central hub of a broader, connected wellness ecosystem.”

Unifying Fractured Operations

When it comes to adding data and tech integrations, many gyms or fitness studios confuse fortification with pure saturation. Operators don’t want an overwhelming flood of solutions or programs. They want to deliver a cohesive experience that, taken together, tells a story.

Wiginton noted that in the past decade, most clubs defaulted to solutions that solved a particular need. They had one platform for on-demand classes, another for heart rate displays, another for digital signage, another for recovery programming and another for app engagement.

While each solve a problem individually, they collectively create operational complexity, leading to staff confusion and increased training burden, delayed decision-making, member friction across different logins and interfaces, redundant costs and disconnected data streams.

“Without consolidation, it becomes nearly impossible to see how digital engagement influences in-club behavior, how recovery usage impacts retention or how app usage correlates with referrals,” Wiginton added. “The challenge isn’t access to tools. It’s orchestration.”

Proper orchestration also allows brands to operate on foresight rather than hindsight.

“To make meaningful decisions about programming, staffing, retention strategy or capital investment, leadership needs centralized visibility across digital and physical engagement. Without it, they’re reacting instead of proactively optimizing,” Wiginton went on. “This is why platforms that consolidate engagement data and deliver structured insights directly to operators will define the next era of operational efficiency.”

Defining “Seamless” Today

Fitness On Demand believes modern fitness experiences should be simple — where members just need to show up and move. Members walk into a gym and their workout automatically begins via their wearable or mobile app. Screens in the facility recognize their profile and suggest workouts matched with their goals. They can join a guided functional session, see live heart-rate metrics or pivot to recovery with structured cooldown programming on a touchscreen.

“From the member’s perspective, seamless means invisible,” Wiginton said.

Then, when they leave, their workout summary is instantly shareable to social platforms, which not only drives retention but also organically promotes the facility. Later that evening, they’ll also receive personalized nutrition guidance, meditation instructions or recommendations to improve sleep quality.

“The key is continuity,” Wiginton said. “The gym doesn’t disappear when they exit the building. It remains a connected wellness partner throughout the day.”

Tracking Omnichannel Engagement

For gyms or fitness studios to make sure they’re successful in facilitating these interwoven, harmonic experiences, they need to divert their attention away from the standard metrics operators have relied on in the past.

“Attendance is a lagging indicator and engagement is predictive,” Wiginton said.

Instead, Fitness On Demand recommends tracking the following KPIs:

  • App usage outside the facility
  • Percentage of members using multiple touchpoints (watch, mobile, or in-club screens)
  • Content streams per member
  • Recovery station usage
  • Social shares and digital referrals
  • Functional zone activation rates
  • Cross-environment participation (in-club and at-home usage)
  • Referral conversions tied to digital engagement

“These metrics reveal behavior patterns that attendance alone cannot,” Wiginton said. “Engagement across multiple environments is strongly correlated with retention and lifetime value. This is precisely why consolidating engagement data into a unified framework — such as a comprehensive engagement grading system — becomes essential. Data by itself doesn’t change outcomes. Interpreted insight does.”

Non-negotiables for the Future

Beyond general tech consolidation, Fitness On Demand also listed personalization at scale, adaptable programming that broadens participation, recovery integration and actionable analytics that inform leadership decisions as “must-haves” for fitness businesses in the future.

That said, cohesion still needs to remain the top priority. While establishing connectivity improves the user experience, it also compounds operational advantages for brands.

“Ultimately, future-proofing isn’t about adding more features, it’s about building a connected fitness ecosystem that activates underused assets, reduces operational complexity, improves retention and delivers measurable ROI,” Wiginton said. “The future of fitness is omnichannel, integrated and insight-driven.”
