Stephen Curry Signs 2-year, $116 Million Extension With Warriors: What It Means

The Golden State Warriors are keeping superstar Stephen Curry in the Bay Area for at least two more years.

The Warriors announced Friday, Sept. 25 that Curry signed a contract extension with the team. A person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports that the two-time MVP and Golden State agreed on a two-year, $116 million extension with a player option in 2028-29.

The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly disclose the details.

Throughout the offseason, both Curry and the Warriors have denied any speculation that the four-time champion would be going to another team. Curry was eligible to be a free agent in July 2027, but general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has continuously expressed the importance of Curry retiring as a Warrior.

The possibility became a definite, concrete answer: indubitably.

"We’ve been incredibly blessed to experience 17 years of Stephen’s artistry and are thrilled that our fans will continue to have the opportunity to watch him perform and write additional chapters to his illustrious story."

What Steph Curry extension means for Golden State

Curry, 38, is now slated to play until he's at least 40 years old. His extension signals there's a level of gratitude between Curry and the Warriors organization. Curry has always expressed a desire to retire with the Warriors.

He missed a good chunk of the season with a lingering knee issue. When he played, the team was 24-19; the Warriors had a 13-26 record without him on the floor.

He returned towards the end of the year to make a run at the postseason, which gave the Warriors a fighter's chance. His powers were on display when he put the team on his back against the Los Angeles Clippers in an NBA Play-In game. It was a vintage performance, reminding people that a Curry flurry can change things in a matter of seconds.

The Warriors' efforts came up short, but his return gave them instant credibility as a threat to upset any team they faced.
