The 49ers have bolstered their depleted running backs room ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
San Francisco is acquiring 26-year-old running back Brian Robinson in a trade with the Washington Commanders, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report the news Friday morning.
San Francisco is sending a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to Washington in return, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported, citing a source.
Robinson is flying to the Bay to take his physical with the 49ers, Schefter added. The trade will become official if and once the physical is passed.
Washington selected Robinson in the third round (No. 98 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he emerged as their top running back over the last three seasons.
In three seasons with the Commanders, Robinson has 570 carries for 2,329 yards and 15 touchdowns, in addition to 65 catches for 587 yards and five receiving touchdowns.
San Francisco’s team-wide injury bug has hit the running backs room pretty hard this offseason, reaching second-year pro Isaac Guerendo, who just returned to practice this week, rookie Jordan James, and Corey Kiner, who was waived after a strong preseason.
Robinson surely will add some reinforcements to the depth chart while others work their way back to the field.
