The Eagles weren’t expected to hire a guy like 33-yeard-old Sean Mannion — a former NFL QB with only two years of coaching experience and no play-calling experience —, but that’s exactly what they did when they announced him as the new Offensive Coordinator. While perhaps surprising, the move was widely accepted as a high risk/his reward situation, and most that know Mannion think Philadelphia was ahead of the NFL in adding his talent to their coaching staff.

Head coach Nick Sirianni explained their decision a bit while welcoming Mannion to the organization:

“It was quickly apparent in meeting with Sean that he is a bright young coach with a tremendous future ahead of him in this league. I was impressed by his systemic views on offensive football, and his strategic approach. Sean’s 11 years in the NFL have provided him a great opportunity to learn from and grow alongside some of the best coaches in the game. As a result, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to our team moving forward. I can’t wait to see Sean with our team, and I want to welcome him and his wife, Megan, to the Eagles family.”

Sirianni acknowledged that they interviewed coaches with various experience, but ultimately, Mannion blew them away and was the man for the job.

Mannion's going to call plays. The QB background was important to the Eagles in this process. Sounds like GB didn't want to lose him.

There's a clear unknown with the play-calling, but after the initial McDaniel/Daboll target, the Eagles were wide open — and play-calling…

The assumption here is that Sean Mannion will be also be the #Eagles' offensive play caller. Nick Sirianni has said repeatedly since giving up play calling midway through his first season that he believes the team needs him to not be the play caller.

We'll see if he changed his… https://t.co/402zJLm7Jo

The downside here is the inexperience and lack of a play-calling history but it does highlight that the #Eagles looked for the best candidate, not just a guy who checked boxes. https://t.co/5EqgtI1McN

This definitely qualifies as a big-swing hire by the Eagles. Mannion has coached just two seasons but played nine in the NFL and is a fast-riser.

There's definitely risk involved with hiring such a green candidate. But there could be plenty of reward too. https://t.co/gZhOCgxESR

Hitch routes run in 2025:

New #Eagles OC Sean Mannion was at the Shrine Bowl last week as the OC for the West team. During his presser, he talked about how he connected with his QBs there and how his own experience going through the draft process helped informed him on how he approaches coaching now. pic.twitter.com/SQLjXiqjEK

I've texted with numerous Green Bay colleagues and several former coaches of Sean Mannion's in last few hours.

Everyone speaks glowingly

One text: "Super smart, great teacher, collaborative, and an A+ human."

Philly gets him NOW before he's on everyone's radar next year. pic.twitter.com/LcxUKBgMSg

Highly recommend listening to Sean Mannion speak about his transition to Packers QBs coach last year. Some relevant details in here, including:

*How he prepared for coaching while he was still playing
*His approach to working with QBs and some of his philosophies at the position…

Sean Mannion was very impressive at the @ShrineBowl . His football acumen stood out in meetings, but his ability to prepare his QB and the unit stood out even more. As a former player, he has an excellent feel for the game and for making complex schemes easily digestible for… https://t.co/AP8LTVSV0H

The #Eagles take a *calculated* swing. Sean Mannion has been an NFL coach for two years and is following a career path similar to Kellen Moore. Backup QB straight into high leverage coaching role.

Mannion will bring a McVay-Shanahan tree offense to Philly, with an emphasis on… pic.twitter.com/wJBF5gG4iF

Sean Mannion has been a fast riser in the coaching ranks. I’m excited that he’s from coming from a LaFleur offense and the growth of Love and Willis is evident. I’m concerned w the lack of experience and not calling plays. After last year’s lack of rhythm, the Eagles needed an…

Really interested in Sean Mannion for the Eagles! Super young offensive mind. Has played in/coached in McVay/LaFleur world for a while but guys this green often have a lot of newness they want to bring to the offense.

Inexperience is a big deal, though! High risk/high reward.
