Nick Folk's Last-second, 56-yard Field Goal Lifts Jets Past Falcons, 27-24

The Jets’ season might be over, but they kept going until the end in a competitive matchup with the Falcons on Sunday, as Nick Folk’s 56-yard field goal as time expired gave them their third win of the season.

New York was the first team on the board as Breece Hall scored on a two-yard touchdown run following a muffed punt. The Jets entered the game with just one defensive turnover all season, but the special teams unit came up with this one, as Qwan’tez Stiggers made the recovery.

For the second game in a row, the Jets almost posted a first-half shutout but gave up a late scoring drive, which ended with Tyler Allgeier’s one-yard touchdown plunge. Atlanta then took a third-quarter lead on a two-yard run by Bijan Robinson.

The Jets countered in style on a 52-yard bomb from Tyrod Taylor to Adonai Mitchell and then each team missed a long field goal as the score remained tied at 14-14. However, on the final play of the third quarter, Zane Gonzalez made a 52-yard field goal to give the Falcons a 17-14 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

More good special teams play got the Jets back into the game as Folk’s game-tying field goal was set up by an 83-yard Isaiah Williams kickoff return. However, a nine-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to David Sills V made it 24-17 to Atlanta with 8:46 to go.

The Jets countered with a 15-play drive as Taylor’s touchdown scramble tied the score with 1:53 remaining, and the Jets were able to get the ball back with enough time to set up Folk’s winning kick.

Here are the key takeaways...

- The Jets obviously anticipated the Falcons trying to control the game with their ground attack, as they employed some defensive personnel packages with three interior linemen in the game together. They also had players such as Eric Watts and Marcelino McCrary-Ball in the defensive rotation, specifically for that purpose. However, they struggled all day to stop Robinson from reaching the second level and driving the pile at the end of runs and he ended up with 142 rushing yards.

- Robinson’s biggest play, however, was a 42-yard catch and run, which saw him completely unaccounted for. This is the kind of defensive breakdown that keeps happening to the Jets this season. It was compounded by a roughing the passer penalty on McCrary-Ball. That was one of two bad penalties on the special teams captain.

- Once again, Glenn’s decision-making on 4th down can easily be second-guessed. One week after turning the ball over in their own half and then punting in Ravens’ territory, the Jets opted to punt on fourth-and-2 in Falcons’ territory and then kicked a field goal down three on fourth down inside the 10-yard line in the fourth quarter. The Jets also might have considered going for two and the lead after Taylor’s touchdown.

- It was a breakout game for Mitchell, but the Jets’ other new receiver, John Metchie III, who had been impressive in the past few games, had a rough game as he failed to come up with at least three catchable balls. This included a pivotal third down in the red zone in the fourth quarter.

- One other line-up change saw cornerback Ja’Sir Taylor taking over for the injured Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at the slot cornerback position. Taylor, who was acquired in a trade at the deadline, stood out for the wrong reasons as he had a missed tackle on both the Robinson touchdown and the Sills touchdown. However, he made a stop to force a punt late in the game.

- For Folk, his 55-yard field goal miss in the third quarter was his first all season. However, he bounced back to make his next two kicks, including the tying extra point under pressure, and then drilled the game-winner with a low kick in rainy conditions.

Game MVP: Jets WR Adonai Mitchell

Mitchell looked like someone with a bright future on Sunday, as he put together an impressive game with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, while also drawing a big pass interference penalty. He showed impressive hands all day, including on two clutch catches on the game-winning drive.
