Jonathan Kuminga Makes 75-foot Shot, Nba's 6th-longest On Record, As Hawks Win 11th Straight

We’re not saying everything is going the Atlanta Hawks’ way now, but Jonathan Kuminga just made the sixth-longest shot of the NBA’s play-by-play era (since 1997-98). In their 11th straight win.

As the third quarter ended in the Hawks’ 135-120 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, Kuminga threw up a prayer — or attempted pass — from 74 feet out, as recorded by the NBA, and received three points (video above).

Per the Hawks, it’s the longest shot ever by a Hawk, breaking a record previously held by Jason Terry with a 63-footer on Jan. 5, 2000.

You can be the judge on whether Kuminga intended for this to hit the basket, but he sure looked like he was targeting an open Jock Landale under the rim. And he sure seemed surprised when it went in.

Whatever the intent, the shot encapsulates what’s been going on with the Hawks these days. With Wednesday’s win, they are 38-31 and tied with the Miami Heat for the seventh-best record in the East. They are only a half-game back from the sixth-place Orlando Magic for the final guaranteed playoff spot as well.

Kuminga joined Atlanta at the NBA trade deadline after four-and-a-half seasons with the Golden State Warriors, heading east with Buddy Hield in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis. Wednesday was his sixth game with the franchise, and he has averaged 14.6 points, 8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in the first five.
