Jahmyr Gibbs Signs $67.5 Million Lions Extension To Become Highest-paid Running Back In Nfl History

The next time Jahmyr Gibbs goes out to dinner with his teammates, he’ll be the one picking up the check. 

The Lions on Thursday gave Gibbs a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension that will keep him in the Motor City through 2030 and make him the highest-paid running back in NFL history, according to multiple reports.

Gibbs’ deal could be worth as much as $75.75 million with incentives and includes $51 million guaranteed, ESPN reported. 

The Lions star will make $22.5 million per year under the extension. 

The deal helped Gibbs usurp the Falcons’ running back Bijan Robinson as the league’s highest-paid running back after he signed a massive three-year, $66.75 million extension earlier this week. 

Gibbs is already under contract through 2027 and was a hold-in at Lions camp this summer.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell had said earlier this week that he was “anxious” to get the star running back out on the field. 

“Every day that goes by, that’s another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part. But there again, man, it’ll get done when it gets done,” Campbell said, according to The Athletic. 

Gibbs has become one of the top backs in the NFL since he arrived on the scene in 2023 as the No. 12 overall pick by the Lions. 

He had 1,223 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns last season, while also boasting 616 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. 

Gibbs has 49 career touchdowns over his three years in the NFL, which are the most for a player in their first three seasons, passing a fellow Lions great, Barry Sanders, who had 47 during that same time period. 

The 23-year-old is expected to see his role increase with David Montgomery being traded to the Texans in the offseason.
