Jahmyr Gibbs and the Detroit Lions have agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million extension that could be worth up to $75.75 million, a person familiar with the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The speedy running back has proven to be an all-around star since the Lions selected him in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and this deal ensures that he won't be leaving the Motor City anytime soon.

Gibbs' deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $22.5 million, which makes him the highest-paid running back in the league, per OverTheCap.

That won't officially kick in until after the 2027 season, however, since Gibbs will play the 2026 season on the final year of his rookie deal and the 2027 season on a fifth-year option.

Gibbs has been everything the Lions could've asked for and more since arriving ahead of the 2023 season. He represented ½ of the "Sonic and Knuckles" backfield with David Montgomery, forming arguably the league's best running back duo.

Now Gibbs will take on a bigger role in the offense after the team traded Montgomery to the Houston Texans. The Lions did sign Isiah Pacheco to replace the bruising back, but Gibbs will look to bring his game to new heights in 2026 and beyond.

The Lions have used him in a variety of ways as a runner and receiver, making the running back one of the league's most valuable weapons. The 24-year-old has proven to be a durable option as well, playing in all 17 games in each of the two previous seasons.

Since debuting in 2023, Gibbs has 856 touches, 5,029 scrimmage yards and 49 touchdowns.
