Filip Chytil Injury Update After Canucks Forward, Referee Collide

Vancouver Canucks forward Filip Chytil is dealing with another injury after a fluke collision during a Thursday, Sept. 24 preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Chytil was forechecking in the first period when his skate blade got tangled with the skate of referee Riley Brace. Chytil went crashing into the boards shoulder first and appeared to hit his head on the ice. Brace also went flying.

Both got up, Brace slowly, though Chytil later went to the dressing room. The Canucks announced that Chytil wouldn't return to the game, and coach Manny Malhotra told reporters after the game that the forward is being evaluated for a shoulder injury.

Chytil left the bench for the dressing room and didn't return.

"It's never good to see a guy leave the game," Malhotra said. "We're having his shoulder looked at and we'll know more (Friday) after the imaging."

Chytil has been limited to 27 games over the past two seasons and to 10 games in 2023-24 because of injuries. He has suffered multiple concussions and dealt with migraines. He also suffered a facial fracture when hit by a puck in practice last season.

He was part of the return when the New York Rangers acquired J.T. Miller from the Canucks in January 2025.
