49ers Waive Preseason Standout Rb After Injury, Sign O-lineman, Receiver

The 49ers’ pesky injury bug struck once again.
San Francisco waived injured rookie running back Corey Kiner on Wednesday, who sustained a severe high ankle sprain in the team’s 22-19 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday.
Kiner, who went unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft, finished Saturday’s win with two carries for 23 yards. He was carted off the field in the second quarter after he rolled his ankle during a 19-yard run. San Francisco immediately ruled him out for the remainder of the game.
In San Francisco’s previous game, a 30-9 blowout loss to the Denver Broncos, Kiner had 10 carries for a game-high 45 yards rushing. The 23-year-old’s performance was one of the few positives that stood out to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who praised the young running back afterward.
But after their return to practice Tuesday, Shanahan told reporters that Kiner would be out for more than a month with the injury.
In a matter of weeks, Ameer Abdullah, Patrick Taylor Jr. and Kiner no longer remain on the 49ers as the team’s running back depth could become a concern. However, second-year pro Isaac Guerendo returned to practice Tuesday after being sidelined with a shoulder injury, a good sign for the 49ers, who hope All-Pro Christian McCaffrey bounces back this season.
In corresponding roster moves, the 49ers signed offensive lineman Michael Dunn and wide receiver Malik Knowles to one-year contracts, while releasing defensive lineman Demone Harris, in addition to waiving Kiner.
Since the 49ers waived Kiner, any team now can claim him off waivers. If no team does so, he will revert to the 49ers’ IR list on Thursday.
Dunn originally entered the NFL after signing with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2017. Throughout his eight-year NFL career with the Rams (2017-18), Jacksonville Jaguars (2018-19), Miami Dolphins (2019) and Cleveland Browns (2020-24), he has appeared in 53 regular-season games (nine starts) and two postseason games (one start).
Last season, Dunn appeared in 13 games (three starts) with the Browns.
Knowles originally entered the NFL after signing with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He has spent his two-year career with the Vikings (2023-24) and Green Bay Packers (2024). He signed with San Francisco on June 3, 2025, before being waived by the team on July 31.
