It appears the 49ers are in the market for a wide receiver.

San Francisco has dealt with numerous injuries, to numerous positions, throughout training camp and the preseason, including wide receiver.

Which is probably why the 49ers, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Sunday, citing sources, attempted to trade for wideout John Metchie before the Houston Texans dealt him to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Philadelphia ultimately acquired Metchie for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round NFL draft pick.

The 25-year-old receiver was selected by Houston in the second round (No. 44 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, and in two seasons with the Texans after missing his entire rookie campaign with a torn ACL and a diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia, recorded 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games (three starts).

It’s unclear what sort of role Metchie would have had in 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense had San Francisco acquired him, but now he joins an NFC rival with less than three weeks before the start of the 2025 NFL season.
