SANTA CLARA — The 49ers on Tuesday signed veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld to join the competition for the team’s No. 3 job.
Sudfeld enters the picture and will compete against Carter Bradley for the No. 3 job behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. Jones was not at practice Tuesday. It’s unclear if he sustained an injury during Saturday’s game against the Raiders.
Sudfeld signed with the 49ers in the offseason of 2021, but he did not make it to the regular season with the team. The 49ers kept Purdy as the No. 3 quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo that season.
The team officially lost a running back to make room for Sudfeld, as they placed Patrick Taylor Jr. on season-ending injured reserve to create the roster spot.
Taylor sustained a shoulder dislocation in the 49ers’ 22-19 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, coach Kyle Shanahan said following the game.
Taylor served as a core special-teams player during the 2024 season and appeared in 13 games. He also made one start at running back. On the season, he carried 39 times for 183 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers expect backup running back Isaac Guerendo to return to action soon after missing a couple of weeks with a shoulder injury, which he sustained during a special-teams drill in training camp.
