The 49ers’ injury bug has hit the defensive backfield.

Cornerback Tre Brown, signed as a free agent in March, has been placed on injured reserve, ending his 2025 NFL season before it even started.

The move clears a roster spot for the 49ers to add Skyy Moore, who was acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The third-year pro arrived in the Bay Area on Thursday, passed his physical and worked out on a side field at San Francisco’s practice facility while rocking a No. 6 jersey.

The 49ers placed CB Tre Brown on IR. That’s the corresponding move to create a roster spot for Skyy Moore. That’s a big one, as Brown was expected to fill vital backup roles when training camp opened. He was a free-agent pickup from the Seahawks.

San Francisco is acquiring a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from Kansas City and sending a 2027 sixth-round draft pick back to the Chiefs.

The 49ers also shuffled their backup quarterbacks, bringing back Tanner Mordecai and releasing Nate Sudfeld, who was signed earlier this week.

Also, as reported earlier today, the 49ers re-signed QB Tanner Mordecai and terminated the contract of QB Nate Sudfeld.

Brown was one of the 49ers’ big offseason additions and was competing for the nickel cornerback job. But with the veteran defensive back out, the competition is between rookie Upton Stout and third-year pro Chase Lucas.

The 27-year-old Brown, a 2021 fourth-round draft pick, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the 49ers this offseason.

The 49ers have been decimated by injuries during training camp and the preseason, and Brown is just the latest to go down.
