49ers overreactions: Will Kyle Shanahan coach another team in 2026 NFL season? originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Is it even possible to overreact following the 49ers’ Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

It was not so much San Francisco’s 30-19 loss to the Baker Mayfield-led Bucs on Sunday. It was what happened midway through the first quarter when four-time All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner went down with a grisly lower leg injury.

That sight of Warner being carted off the field with his right leg in an air cast signaled a dramatic change in how the remainder of this season should be viewed.

Here is this week’s edition of 49ers Overreactions:

The Niners offense will need to avg 30-35 ppg from now on to carry the defense in order to win games. Defense went from the strength of this team to the biggest question mark (@Jake_Lovo)

Overreaction? No.

The pieces should be in place soon for the 49ers to return to being one of the NFL’s better offenses.

One of the big keys is getting tight end George Kittle back on the field. He gives the offense a boost in the running game as much as he does as a pass catcher.

The defense is going to have a difficult time for the remainder of the season without their two most-important players. Nick Bosa and  Warner are out for the season. Bosa was their only consistent pass-rusher, and Warner is a takeaway-generating machine.

The 49ers’ offense is going to have to score a lot of points the rest of the way to win games and remain in the playoff chase.

The 49ers need to address the o line in the 2026 draft with the same aggressiveness and mindset that they did the defensive line in the 2025 draft. (@AntonelliEric)

Overreaction? No.

While the 49ers are not likely to invest three of their top five draft picks in offensive linemen, as they did with the D-line this year, that position will require attention in the offseason.

Looking ahead, the 49ers figure to have three urgent draft needs: Offensive line, edge rusher and wide receiver.

They claim that offensive line was an area on their radar early in the 2025 NFL Draft. If things had gone differently with the teams selecting ahead of them, they would have picked an offensive lineman.

For instance, if the Saints had chosen Mykel Williams at No. 9, the 49ers might have selected offensive tackle Kelvin Banks. And if the Raiders had not picked Caleb Rogers and Charles Grant back to back in the third round, one of those player could have gotten the call over Upton Stout.

It is clear the 49ers cannot wait until the seventh round, once again, to address the offensive line in the 2026 NFL Draft.

It doesn’t have to be a big name for either position, but the 49ers need to trade for a starting ILB and a starting DE now. (@shoqmax)

Overreaction? Yes.

There is no way the 49ers should strip away any future resources to acquire anybody in a trade who lends assistance for only this season.

It is no longer about this season for the 49ers. Sure, the 49ers can still win some games and, possibly, contend for the NFC West title. But the focus should be on developing the young players and riding out the ups and downs.

Tatum Bethune should be OK at middle linebacker in place of Warner. The 49ers lack edge rushers, for sure, but it makes little sense to go out and acquire somebody unless he comes to the 49ers on a multi-year contract.

The 49ers need to hold onto as much of their draft capital as possible to supply the roster with another wave of good, young players at a variety of positions for the 2026 season.

Kyle Shanahan will be with a new team next year. (@cdk_eth)

Overreaction? Yes.

The conversation surrounding Kyle Shanahan after Week 5 was quite the opposite. There was plenty of discussion about this being his best coaching job and whether he was an early front-runner for NFL Coach of the Year.

We do not envision him going anywhere. That would certainly make some other team quite happy. He would not be without a job for very long. It seems more likely than not that Shanahan will eventually become the longest-tenured head coach in franchise history. Bill Walsh coached 10 seasons; Shanahan is currently in his ninth year.
