Trump Says Fed Chair Decision Coming Friday

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he will announce his choice for the next chair of the Federal Reserve on Friday morning, in what would end months of speculation about one of his most important economic policy decisions.

Trump's remarks, at the premiere of a documentary about his wife, Melania, came a day after the central bank voted to keep interest rates steady, following three consecutive rate cuts. Fed board member Christopher Waller, who is on Trump’s short list, was one of two dissenters against the decision.

The other candidates who have interviewed with Trump for the job are former Fed board member Kevin Warsh, BlackRock executive Rick Rieder and White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, though Trump has suggested he might prefer to keep Hassett in his current job.

The Inner Circle, a newsletter by Rachael Bade, reported that Warsh was the likely pick.

The president lashed out once again against the outgoing Fed chair, whose term ends in May, in a post on Truth Social earlier Thursday.

“Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell again refused to cut interest rates, even though he has absolutely no reason to keep them so high,” Trump said in his post. “He is hurting our Country, and its National Security.”

He argued that the U.S. should be paying “the LOWEST INTEREST RATE OF ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD” because of the strength of the U.S. economy. Rates that are higher relative to other countries can be a sign of a healthier economy.
