Trump Enters The Sydney Sweeney Discourse

President Donald Trump on Monday weighed in on actress Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle jeans ad, writing that product is “flying off the shelves” and continuing his inclination to comment on cultural flash points.

“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there,” he wrote in a Truth Social post. “Go get ‘em Sydney!”

American Eagle’s ad campaign — which quickly went viral — features a denim-clad Sweeney, who proclaims jeans, or genes, “are passed down from parents to offspring.”

“My jeans are blue,” she said as the camera pans up to her blue eyes.

Critics have said the ad not-so-subtly promotes eugenics, the belief that certain traits are more desirable and humans should selectively reproduce to prioritize these genetics.

“Damn I thought you all were joking but that Sydney Sweeney ad really does say ‘genes determine personality,’” Harvard lecturer Erik Baker wrote in a post on X. “Our culture is absolutely cooked.”

In defense of the campaign, American Eagle released a statement saying the ad “is and always was about the jeans.”

In his post — which he deleted twice and reposted three times, fixing various typos — Trump compared the ad with that of the “woke” ones on the “other side of the ledger.”

“Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE, advertisement, THAT IS A DISASTER,” he said. “Shouldn’t they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed in a short but very Woke campaign, the Company.”

The Jaguar ad featured a diverse set of models wearing androgynous clothing with captions like “break moulds.” Adrian Mardell, the then-CEO of the company, announced his retirement after the ad.

Trump continued on, saying that “the tide has seriously turned” in the country and promoting a culture shift toward the right.

“Being Woke is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be,” he said.

The president also continued his attacks on musician Taylor Swift in the post, seeming to offer her as a comparison to Sweeney. Trump has criticized Swift in the past after she endorsed Democratic candidates, including his once-competitor Kamala Harris.

“Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT,” he wrote.
