A majority of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s decision to strike Iran on Saturday, according to a new poll from CNN.

The survey, conducted Sunday and Monday, found that 56 percent of Americans disapprove of the strikes, with 44 percent expressing approval of the decision.

While nearly nine in 10 Democrats disapproved of the decision, eight in 10 Republicans expressed approval for the airstrikes aimed at Iran’s nuclear sites.

The GOP has largely fallen in line with the Trump administration’s decision, despite objections from Democrats and some Republican lawmakers that the president failed to seek congressional authorization for the use of military force.

Nearly all of the interviews for the poll were conducted before Iran launched retaliatory strikes against American military bases in the Middle East on Monday, and all interviews were concluded before Trump’s Monday evening announcement of a ceasefire. The strikes, which Iran warned of in advance, appeared to be largely symbolic.

Trump announced a ceasefire deal between Israel and Iran in a Monday night social media post, which appears fragile Tuesday morning. Trump chastised both countries for apparently violating the ceasefire.

A large majority of Americans expressed opposition to the possibility of sending ground troops to Iran, and 65 percent said the president should be required to seek congressional approval for further military action.

The CNN survey was conducted by the firm SSRS from June 22-23, polling 1,030 American adults via text message. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
