Wondering If I Need A Restraining Order Against My Ex

Card image cap

Location: Ohio

I broke up with my ex-boyfriend in May of last year. It was a very toxic and destructive relationship. We were together for a year and a half and I can honestly only remember the first 6 months or so being “happy.” He was so sweet, assuring, and supportive in the beginning but once his mask fell, it was a whole different person. He became cruel, disrespectful, and treated me terribly. When we broke up, I was determined to cut him out of my life for good. I didn’t wanna go back and forth with him at all. I had already wasted so much on the situation that I was just done. I ignored his many attempts to contact me, I blocked every number he tried to contact me from, and when he showed up to my house a few times afterwards, I told him to leave. He eventually stopped bothering me and I moved on.

Fast forward to now, a whole year later, and I’m in a new relationship and doing much better. Until….I got a knock at my door this morning at about 4:30am and check the doorbell camera to see him standing outside. I decided to ignore him and hope that he went away. He knocked for a while and I continued to not answer. Suddenly, I hear something in my living room. Come out of the bathroom to see that he’s gotten into my house through an unlocked window. I yell at him and tell him to get out. He keeps trying to plead his case. I should’ve called the cops right then and there but I didn’t (dumb of me, I know). Eventually he left and claimed he wouldn’t come back.

I told my friends and current boyfriend what happened and they all said I should get a restraining order. My dilemma is this, 1. He didn’t damage any property or threaten me with harm and 2. I failed to call the police and report what he did when he was here. I’m worried that I won’t be taken seriously. Has anybody ever successfully gotten a restraining order against someone for something like this? Or does there need to be a lot of evidence and police reports to back me up?
