Wa State !! Breaking Lease/lease Not Notarized
Location: Washington State
Hi! I live in Washington State (Mercer Island), and I’m wondering if it’s actually possible to break my lease because it was never notarized. I’m currently on a 15-month lease, and when I signed it, I was out of state—so I know for sure it wasn’t notarized then. I understand that notarization doesn’t necessarily require the tenant to be present, but the copy of my lease available on my portal (which is signed) doesn’t have any notary seal or indication that it was notarized at all.
From what I’ve read, that might mean I’m technically on a month-to-month lease term, but I’m not totally sure. Is there another way to verify whether it was notarized somewhere else? And is there any sort of deadline or requirement for when notarization has to happen?
This place hasn’t been a great living situation for my partner and me, so we’re trying to figure out if there’s any way to get out of the lease without paying a huge buy-out fee—or if we’re basically stuck riding it out.
