Unemployment Denied, Fired Due To "annoying Coworkers" (reporting Abusive Behavior) - Ca
Location: CA - I worked for a retail location as a supervisor for a little over a year. Boss was notorious for firing people, hiring, not training them, not giving feedback, and firing again for inconsequential/preventable behaviors.
During this time one of my coworkers, a fellow supervisor, was terrorizing the staff below her. She would snap, throw things towards people, slam things as you walked by, act nice to your face then use innocent things you said against you with other managers/the boss. She was so aggressive that our entry level team were all stressed about working with her, worried about being fired if their performance faltered due to the stress, some of them were having panic attacks or severe gastrointestinal distress. One of them had a physical disability that was being exacerbated by her bullying, and it was severely affecting her mental/physical health. Customers constantly complained.
I mentioned this when I first started - many times, to the general manager and to the boss. I was told she's always been like that. Like, 10-20 years of this behavior. Nothing happened. Eventually I gave up, just stopped talking to her. Did what I could to help/protect the team.
I brought it back up, now a year into this job, and was told that this was the first my boss was hearing about it, and they needed me to inform them of things in the moment going forward so they could handle them accordingly. OK, no problem.
Finally shit hit the fan and she was acting this way surrounding a coworker leaving work for something very sensitive/important. I told my boss what happened in a very neutral way, asked if I should have handled anything differently. They said no, I was professional and did everything right, and they would look into/handle it.
Came back after two days off and I was fired with no explanation. They mumbled something about "team fit" which was their excuse every time.
Applied for unemployment, was denied with a letter simply stating "YOU WERE DISCHARGED FROM YOUR LAST JOB WITH _____ BECAUSE OF ACTIONS WHICH ANNOYED YOUR COWORKERS". Shit, if I did anything annoying no one told me, I loved working there and my coworkers loved me. I can only think of one "annoying" thing I did, which was rock the boat (AKA try to protect my coworkers' health).
TLDR I reported abusive behavior from a coworker to my boss and they fired me on my next shift without warning or reason; unemployment was denied, citing my "annoying behavior" as the reason.
A) can I appeal this without having any more information from my boss? I already have another job but the couple weeks of unemployment would really help while I wait for my paychecks to resume. Also screw them.
B) can I report them somewhere for the hostile environment? Beyond that there were countless OSHA violations, food safety hazards, lack of training, people using equipment without certs (people getting injured from using equipment uncertified... peoples workers comp falling through the woodwork after said injuries...) the list goes on
I don't know where to start but I have do to something, at bare minimum a couple hundred bucks for rent... :(
