Terminated After Making Sexual Misconduct Complaint

Location: Iowa

Ok this is a sensitive subject and I will do my best to explain in great detail. If there is any additional information needed I will provide it as necessary.

There is an employee that worked in a separate department than I did, however all employees shared the same bathroom. He has been caught multiple times masturbating in the employee bathroom while other employees have been in the bathroom (myself included). It has been brought to his managers attention before in the past but instead of termination or a write up, the manager asked this employee in an open, all employee meeting if this was happening. The employee obviously denied and was just told to stop doing it. Everyone laughs and the situation is dropped. Some time goes by and I’m using the restroom to relieve myself, as I’m in one of the stalls I couldnt help but notice the sound coming from the stall next to me (very obvious sound). I looked to my left and seen the shadow of someone shaking back and fourth very fast and stretching their feet pretty much into my stall. I couldn’t even relieve myself in peace without having to deal with that again. Feels as if I was subjected to sexual misconduct at that point and made me extremely uncomfortable. I took a short video of what I seen which was his feet and shadow which clearly shows what he was doing next to me. The video shows nothing inappropriate, or what i couldnt already see from where i was sitting. I sent that video to a few employees to verify it was who I thought it was. Once confirmed, I took the video to management in good faith hoping it would be enough evidence this time. The manager laughed hysterically and said “I guess if you’re going to rub on something, it might as well be your d***.” And that was the end of that conversation. The following morning I was pulled into the office by my own manager and was asked what happened. I gave him the run down of everything and was fired on the spot for “taking videos in the bathroom.” When I asked what I should’ve done instead or if there was anything I can do to fix the situation I was told I needed to leave. I was able to get a meeting with all the managers involved the next day to plead my case, but they didn’t listen. I was able to get a voice recording of that meeting where they admit that they should've done more when it was first brought to their attention the first time and also say they won’t “blackball” me at other shops as long as I don’t speak bad about the company for what happened, which to me sounds like blackmail. I even got a long letter of recommendation from the manager who fired me. I believe I was wrongfully terminated with no warning or heads-up after 4 years of my service. This has hurt me financially, has stained my reputation and has absolutely strained me mentally and emotionally. I want to sue this company or do anything I can that will help my situation for what I believe was wrongful termination and retaliation, because I was subjected to sexual misconduct during work hours and it was not addressed appropriately. I have already filed a complaint with the civil rights committee in the state of Iowa, as I wait for a response, I would like to know what case, if any I have against the company, or I i should pick my wounds and just carry on. Any responses are greatly appreciated.
