Someone Wants To Use My House As Primary Residence
Thank you in advance for your help.
Location: KY.
I live in KY and the person in question lives in NJ. He got a job that requires him to reside in the Great Lakes region but he wants to remain in NJ. Because KY is in that region officially, we are being asked as a favor if we'd be willing to rent out our spare room "just on paper" for a couple of hundred dollars a month.
While getting a little bit of extra income, which would be subject to income tax, of course, would be nice, I am worried we would officially be an accessory to fraud. I am worried this might affect my insurance and mortgage, and possibly anything else.
I don't know this person, and the request came through my cousin who has been friends with this person for years.
I have looked online and read it is mostly considered occupancy fraud when a person claims a rental as their primary residence for better rates but instead rents the place out. We do live in our house. But would this be considered fraud too? What are some of the risks?
Thank you!
