Osha Question: Does Ppe Have To Be Enforced?
Is it an OSHA violation if PPE is available on site but the use of said supplies is not enforced?
I’m on the Summer maintenance crew at a ski resort and we’re currently building a sprung structure. We’re on the insulation portion and I’ve been told there’s not fiberglass involved but I really don’t think that’s true. There HAS to be fiberglass because I swear can feel it. Went home absolutely covered in it and I’m not sure how to get it out of my jacket, pants, or hands. Packing tape has helped to get it out of my hands quite a bit but I can still feel some and it is kind of painful and uncomfortable.
There are safety gloves and N95 masks on site but the use of them hasn’t been enforced. I tried to use the safety gloves but they’re absolutely huge on me because I have small hands. I can’t do anything in them because my fingers can’t properly grasp anything and they have a tendency to slip off of my hands anyways. I should have been using the mask but it kept fogging up my glasses so I opted to not wear it (I know, I’m sorry) yet none of these items have been enforced by any leader. The safety equipment hasn’t been enforced by the project manager, the engineer, or any of my bosses. We probably still have a week of insulation installation and I’m not sure what I should do or think.
On top of this, I’m in a scissor lift all day and I have a harness but I never went through actual fall training. I was shown how to put it on and how to clip in but that’s about it. It was pretty last minute one random afternoon last week. I don’t know, something about this whole process feels off but maybe it’s all legal? I guess I’m mostly just curious as to if this all seems legitimate.
