Nephew Responsible For His Mothers Rent Being Sent To Collections?
Location: South Carolina. My SIL was living in a subsidized apartment with her 3 children. They were all minors when the lease began. They moved out last September during which time the 3 kids all turned 18 (19, 20, 21). My nephew (the 19 year old) just went to buy a used car and he had a 715 credit score. When the bank ran his credit it came back at 620 due mostly to a recent charge off from the rental company. He called the rental company and they told him they automatically add anyone over 18 to the lease. It ended up only being $240 which his mother had ignored when they moved out. He paid it this week since his mother continued to ignore it. I don’t have the lease to see if this is written anywhere but would it really be possible to send all 3 kids to collection for a lease they never signed? My SIL is obviously an idiot and my nephew is royally pissed. It’s going to cost him over $100/month more on his car vs what he could have gotten. I’m just trying to help the kid out with some advise from across the country. Thanks for any advise.
