Neighbor “accidentally” Shot Through My Wall And The Police Will Do Nothing

Location: Omaha, Nebraska

Earlier this week I walked into my living room with a bullet hole right above our couch. My partner and I slept through it but we are very heavy sleepers so this honestly is not surprising. I called my landlords and they had me call the police. When the police got to my apartment they went over knocked on my neighbors door(which he did not answer) and then came over and said unless we can prove there was intent then there is nothing we can do about this. My landlords daughter knows the neighbor and had called when I first informed them and told her his gun fell off his nightstand and went off through the wall. This makes no sense since the bullet hole was about 4 ft up the wall. The police went to the leasing office to go and get neighbors information and “do research” into what they could do. They came back and said they got a hold of him and he said he was cleaning his gun at 3am and accidentally shot it through the wall. He also said he knocked on our door to check if we were okay and then no one answered so he went to bed. The police also said even if the bullet hit me there is nothing they can do about that unless there was intent. My partner and I have a very visibly queer apartment and have marijuana related posters on our walls and one of the officers started giving off very different energy after seeing those from when we first were introduced, so I’m also not sure if that had anything to do with how the officers were treating us. Long story short the police would only file an information report and told us there’s nothing else they can do and this happens all the time so this isn’t new. I live in Omaha, Nebraska and I just want to see if there’s anything we can even do to hold our neighbor accountable more. All the landlord is asking is for him to pay for the damages. None of his story is lining up and where the bullet hole is lines up with where my head would be while sitting on our couch. Just so incredibly frustrated that no one seems to care about this guy shooting through our wall. Any advice if there’s any farther action I can take with this would be helpful!

Update: I also forgot to add in that our landlord is moving us into a new apartment a week after this happened free of charge and is also discounting our rent by $30 off/month. So it feels like either landlord is trying really hard to make sure we are happy and good or since their daughter knows this guy to cover that up and make sure he doesn’t get anything on his record.
