My Sister Refuses To Go To School. How Can My Mom Avoid Legal Trouble?

Location: Ohio.

My sister is 13 years old and, as the title says, refuses to go to school. She literally just lays in bed in the morning and refuses to get up until my mom has to leave for work. It’s prob going on a month that she hasnt gone to school.

Honestly, my mom doesn’t really parent her and just lets her keep her phone and toys and shit all day. I’m usually the one who has to enforce things. But my aunt got put in jail twice last year for her kids not going to school, and after being homeless multiple times in my childhood i’m really worried about my mom getting arrested and her losing her job which leads us to having no housing.

My mom took her to a therapist who gave her anxiety meds, and I guess the school is already aware since on the days that my mom can get my sister out of bed, apparently the school counselor has to go out and talk her out of the car. She’s said that there’s nothing going on at school and she’s not being bullied or anything, she literally just doesn’t want to go.

If i’m being honest i’m fairly sure that at this point my sister is just doing this so she can do homeschool (has outright demanded multiple times that my mom puts her in homeschool.) But i feel like if my mom gave in it’d only teach her that as long as she pushes my mom to the breaking point she’ll get what she wants (she does this all the time.) And neither of us believe that she’ll actually even do homeschool, especially since she’s refusing to do one with structured times and everything and demanding that she gets signed up for the one SHE wants (the one that lets her log on and do it whenever she wants). But at this point is giving in to her demands our only option??

Would it be overkill to have the cops come and talk some sense into her? ????

I’m extremely frustrated with both of them and at this point just want to figure out a way to avoid my mom getting put in jail. Sorry if I rambled a bunch but this is honestly so annoying.

edit: hey guys i reread this and i apologize if this post came off as hostile or mean or insensitive or whatever, i was very frustrated when i posted this, im a nice person i swear ????‍???? But thank you everyone for the advice! I appreciate the different perspectives and it’s giving me a lot to think about. I will be passing most of what i’m being told over to my mom so we can figure out the right plan.
