My Friend Got Scammed

My close friend of several years recently got scammed really bad. hes 19 and has a really rich family, he has no social life outside of seeing me and his other friends for 2 days like twice a year so hes a very online person. He somehow came accross some sketchy Nigerian Prince scammer who asked him for 100 bucks and said he'd invest it and turn it into 5k for my friend. So he naively sent the money. Then the scammer continued to milk him for 3 whole months and my friend kept giving him money until it racked up to about 5,000 dollars that he gave this scammer before realizing he was never seeing his money again. this was about 6 months ago it started and I just learned about it now because he was so terrified me and our friends would just clown him for being so stupid. He's apparently broke now and his family doesnt trust him with any money but in a desperate last ditch attempt to get the money back he sent the scammer another 150 dollars last week because the scammer said he needed it to unfreeze his bank account or whatever. Im trying to be supportive of him despite how insane this is but is this something that he could take legal action against? I dont know the law or how these scams fit into them but he'd have proof of all the messages and bank account transfers if he needed it. I really want to help him out but I dont know how
