Location: California Do I Own My Designs? Or Does My Employer Have Claim To All My Intellectual Property While Employed? I’m A W2 Employee

Location: California

hi, I’m a standard W2 employee working as a sales person at a small company, also as a buyer…no NDA or other type of agreements other than standard hiring agreements. the wage is a couple dollars above minimum.

owner of the company asked me to start researching a method of printing products, he approved the purchase of a 3d printer which I had purchased using company funds.

they wanted prints the first day, so I used my personal license to a CAD package and designed a few parts for them to teach them how to utilize their new printer.

this place has a management issue where stuff doesn’t get done. I recently got layered underneath a new manager so zero communication with the owner.

one thing owner mentioned was that he wanted to sell my designs in passing, I over heard it while he was telling a middle manager that the 3d prints and designs were great…and how the middle manager was doing a great job there…

there was no agreement made For him to own this property…

I plan on leaving this place very soon, I wanted to take these designs make them freely available online and earn a small commission through ad revenue as a form of passive income…would I be in the clear to do that?
