Letter To Towing Company For Towing Charges On Car That Is Not Mine

Card image cap

Location: Washington state.

I sold my car over two years ago. The buyer paid cash and took off without giving me any name or address and wouldn't respond when I tried to contact them...so when I filed the sale with the DoL I had to leave the buyer info blank. I filed the report in 2023.

Fast forward two years, the car got towed and impounded. The new buyer never registered the car. The DoL says I am not the hook for the fines since I did what I could to register it as sold. The towing company insists I pay them thousands of dollars in towing and storage fees. Car has already been sold at auction.

I am considering sending them a notarized letter that I drafted.

Is this a good idea? Any changes you would make to the letter?

"To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to formally dispute the towing charges assessed against me regarding a vehicle identified by license plate number XXXXXX, which was reportedly impounded on XX/XX/2025.

I sold this vehicle in 2023, two years prior to the incident, and was no longer the legal owner or responsible party at the time of the tow.

I filed a Report of Sale in 2023, notifying the Department of Licensing of the transfer of ownership. As such, I am not the legal owner or responsible party for any liabilities associated with the vehicle after that date. I have spoken to the Washington Department of Licensing who confirmed this sentiment.

Please remove any towing fees or storage charges associated with my name or record immediately. Additionally, I request written confirmation that my name has been cleared from any further liability in this matter.

If this issue is not resolved within 15 business days of receipt of this letter, I reserve the right to pursue further legal remedies, including filing a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General's Office and seeking resolution through Small Claims Court."
