Location: Rockford, Illinois

Today, my partner got a call from an investigator who works for the Rockford Police Department, stating that our vehicle was in an accident that allegedly someone was driving our truck, describing me, that caused an accident by reversing and backing up the trucks bumper and sideswiping their car and hitting their front end. Which makes no sense how he would've got sideswiped if they were behind the truck. I recall nothing happening like that whatsoever beside that one night a larger dude came out of his truck with my window down and threatened he would beat my ass and kept following me down the road for a few minutes. This apparently happened on my partners birthday as well, on 5/29/25, and we got a call 20 days later or so. He showed a recent photo that was taken at our apartment and stated that a silver piece was missing to my bumper and by his own words "Don't worry, you already got it fixed" along with "Be honest with me" when he called again.

We both sounded so confused and looked around our truck for damages and there were NONE besides a few dents and small scratches. He wanted my partner to take a photo of the driver side vehicle to see if there's any scratches at all and said he would just forget about it if there is none. He lied about where the photo was taken place and lied about my bumper having a missing piece in the photo and said the peice was back on, there was no silver piece missing, the photo he showed was blurry on the right side of the bumper. And it's a truck and there's scratches everywhere especially when I bought it at the dealership. I also recently scratched it on a yellow post trying to squeeze between my mothere car to jump her battery and I have yellow paint on the scratch, and now I'm afraid since they were by my vehcile, they're trying to get us to admit fault for something we never even did. I do have my license and I'm one of the few people that drive my partner's truck along with my mother.

But my license has been suspended a month or so ago, we havent drove it in so long. I do have insurance and would never do a hit and run, that makes no sense for me to do so. What are my options and what should I do? The internet says I should consult and get a lawyer and do not talk to the investigatoruntil i do so, I unfortunately don't have money, but I'm trying to get my job back at UPS and I'm also afraid my job will be jeopardized again. I've been sad all day about this because I would always be honest and feel so heart-broken someone like the investigator think we would lie to him. Should I send the photos that could potentially help his investigation even tho I know i never did this, or should I get a Lawyer?
