Incentives Removed After I Agreed To Work

Location: Michigan -- At-will company.

Hi everyone,

At my company, my manager posted in our group chat that due to short staffing there were several open shifts available to be picked up, and that each shift would include a $50 incentive. There were no additional requirements — the message stated that if you picked up a shift, you would simply receive the extra $50.

Based on that information, I picked up several shifts through the end of November and December. I do not normally work these shifts; I only accepted them because the $50 incentive was advertised with each one.

However, upper management recently changed the incentive policy. They now require employees to work at least two regular shifts per week before being eligible for any incentive pay, and the new incentive structure is $3–5 per hour. For an 8-hour shift, that totals less than the original $50 flat-rate incentive.

My question is: Since I already picked up these shifts when they were specifically advertised with the $50 incentive, and the only reason I agreed to work them was because of that incentive, can the company legally remove or change the incentive after I accepted the shifts?
