Girlfriend And I Can’t Tell If She’s Being Scammed Or If It’s A Legit Lawsuit.

Bear with me because I don’t have a lot of the facts and this all happened so quick. TLDR on bottom.

So about a month ago my girlfriend was notified by her mom and brother that someone was trying to reach her. She never received a call and we never received anyone at the house serving her papers of any kind. She got in touch with them today and they are saying she was sued for a loan she took out back in 2012. She owes $5000 but they’re willing to settle for $2100.

They are saying they summoned her, she didn’t show up and they went through with proceedings anyway. Now the phone call felt very “strong arm” as he was pressuring her to have a payment or at least an agreement to make a payment by Friday morning. (It’s currently Wednesday night).

I don’t have all the details and this loan would have been before we met. Where I come in is her and I have a co-signed vehicle together and they’re threatening to put a lean on it if she doesn’t pay by Friday. She told them she would pay she just wants documents of all the court stuff to prove she’s not paying some rando.

He got a bit cranky, but was cranky before as my girlfriend was upset because finances are not good for either of us now. He told her he couldn’t send them and she would have to go to the courthouse tomorrow (Thursday) morning to request them.

I’ve never had to deal with this, and to me it sounds like a scam. I feel weird about just giving some guy $2000 because he threatened me. Any help is appreciated and if you have any questions that will help you assess I will answer what I can. Again I only know what she’s telling me, but she has no clue what the loan is even for.
