Did A Tow Truck Illegally Tow My Vehicle?

(Sorry this is long but I want to make sure I mention all the details) Location: California I was at a gas pump when the wind closed my door barley enough for it to latch locked. I called Geico immediately and told them they said someone would come in 30-40mins. I let one worker that was outside know of the situation and then I went inside to pay for my gas and let the clerk know I have a tow truck on the way to open my car. While im waiting at my car I have two different weird men come up to me so at this point im really not feeling safe. 50mins go by I call the tow truck company to ask where they are and tell them im not feeling safe where i am. The lady on the phone tells me it would be another 40mins before they get there to call geico to see if they could get someone else out faster. I call geico and they said to cancle and get someone else it would take 60mins so its best to wait the 40mins. I see another strange man walking toward me so I decide to go to the Starbucks next door (like 40-50ft away I could see my car the entire time) I get something to drink then stood at my car again for another 30mins (this whole time I see one man in his car looking at me on the phone then later another guy comes and parks near him they talk 1st guy leaves 2nd guy stands outside his car looking at me) I decide to sit in the Starbucks for what i think is the last 10mins when I was walking guy gets in his car and follows me and waits outside of Starbucks. I use the restroom and wait a bit (the guy eventually leaves) all while looking out the window watching my car to see if the tow truck or anyone else comes up to my car. Now an hour has passed since the tow company said "another 40mins" i stand outside looking around to see if I see a tow truck I call the tow company again and they said it would be another 20mins I tell her I still really dont feel safe so im going to be in the Starbucks. I wait 20mins see a tow truck pull in I go to my car and wait for the tow truck to come to my car. He comes to my car and so does a AmPm worker and they said to me they are going to tow my car away. I tell them I already have a tow truck coming i told someone inside that already. He said the owner said they are losing money with my vehicle there and there are signs saying only 15mins parking and I said what am I supposed to do I cant move my car I told you guys that already he told me I should have had my car towed to a parking spot or something and I told him thats what I been waiting for was a tow truck my insurance was sending he just threw his hands up and walked away. I told the tow truck driver I have been waiting for someone for 3 hours now. He said he would wait 5mins before hooking up my car he did not he immediately started hooking up my car my mom and step dad were on speaker trying to tell him what he was doing wasn't right when he was doing that the tow company my insurance sent over finally came and I told him the situation and turned around to the other tow driver and said he is here he can unlock my car and I can go. He said "I dont like your dad's tone so if you want me to drop it it will be $250 right now" I told him why he said because "I dont like your dad" (I have video of him saying this) when I look for the tow driver my insurance sent he is driving off!! So he ends up taking my vehicle and I had to pay over $600 to get it out. Geico said they would reimburse me. Some sources are saying it was legal because it was private property and there was signs. Other resources are saying it was illegal because I already had a tow company coming and told them that. So was it illegal? On the receipt of the tow company it says "abandoned vehicle" but I was still on the property and at my vehicle before he came up to it.
