Costs Of A Divorce In Canada?
Someone very close to me is in an emotionally (and at least for sure in the past, physically) abusive marriage with a partner who struggles with alcoholism. She doesn’t want to start the process of separating from him because she knows he will refuse and she knows it will likely be a long, costly journey. I’m trying to get a better idea of the price and timeline so I can hopefully convince her to move forward with this. They own a home together, and she refuses to leave the house because she’s put so much time and effort into fixing it up, and so does he. She knows he will not want to give up his ownership of the house down the line either. She also doesn’t really have the money to buy him out. She makes enough to be able to afford the mortgage payments on her own I believe, so I think that should help, but I think he does as well. There is evidence of his abuse (911 calls, CFS involvement years ago, protection orders, he went to jail for a bit years ago) so I think the courts will side with her even if he puts up a fight? But I honestly have no clue how this works. So realistically, how much $ is she looking at for a separation like this? And how long of a timeline? Additionally, any advice on this helps a ton!! (Also, their kids are adults now so custody won’t be an issue)
