Car Back From Service With Additional 2000 Miles

Card image cap

Location: Maryland, US

Our car was at the dealership for service. The need for service was unexpected. Due to timing, we had to (with the agreement of the dealership) leave the car at the dealership for a week after the repair was completed.

When we got the car back it had around 2000 extra miles on it. We didn’t notice the odometer at first. We did notice that the back seat was dirty and that the hand rest was down. Which was weird, but we were planning on having the car cleaned anyway so we let it go. Then, we found a receipt in the car from a vacation area 250 miles from our location dated 6/5 (when the car was at the dealership and we were out of the country). That’s when we noticed the odometer.

The paperwork from the dealership has the correct mileage from when it went in and records the mileage as the same when it left.

We have driven 56 miles since leaving the dealership. The previous trip history is gone.

The car is still under warranty. We have confirmed there is video footage of the transaction with the receipt and the parking lot. The car manufacturer can get all the GPS data from our car, but they need a police report number first.

We have spoken to the dealership. They were appropriately appalled, said they were going to look into it. They have not contacted us since. And have not responded to our repeated follow up.

Are there other options that we can use before going to the police? I’d prefer to avoid that for a number of reasons, not least of which is that I think the incident had to start with a dealership problem, rather than an individual. Especially given their lack of follow up.
