Can A Commercial Landlord Refuse To Return My Property Because The Business Renting The Space Owes Him Money?
A local film lab closed without warning while they still had several rolls of my negatives and a camera I left with them for servicing. The owner stopped responding and the storefront has been locked for a few weeks.
I finally tracked down the building owner. He confirmed everything inside is still there, but said the business owes him several months of rent and he is not letting anyone remove anything until that gets sorted out.
I explained that the camera and negatives belong to me and I have receipts and emails from the lab proving they were only holding them for service. He still refused. I even offered to pay a reasonable fee for someone to open the building and supervise while I grab my stuff, but he said this is between him and his tenant.
Can a commercial landlord legally keep property belonging to the tenant's customers like this? Is this something I could ask the police to help with if I have proof of ownership, or would I need to file something in court to get it back?
