Being Sued For 28,000$...how To Respond?

In January I was hit by a truck while riding a snowmobile up in Idaho. I almost died but was also listed as being at fault for the accident by the police report (I blacked out and have no memory of what happened which is frustrating.) The truck was totaled and the drivers are now asking for 28,000$ to cover the cost of their truck.
I received this message through AAA and am curious how best to proceed. I've spoken with a few lawyers who have said that hiring them would be pointless as it would only add legal fees on top of the 28,000$ that I will most likely have to certainly pay. I definitely don't have that much money and have no real assets of any kind under my name. I've been denied by both auto and homeowner's insurance so I'm pretty screwed here it feels like.
Should I just reply back to AAA letting them know that I cannot pay that amount and wait for the other shoe to drop? What should I expect moving forward? I am very unversed in all of this and am nervous about making any kind of wrong move. Any insight is appreciated!!
