Being Sued, But Cannot Pay- What Now?

Card image cap

Long story short: I voluntarily had my car repossessed last year after the transmission blew and I could not afford the monthly payment + insurance + saving for the repair. They sold the vehicle at auction for only $1500, leaving me with a balance on the loan of just under $11k. I received a summons to court as I am now being sued for that balance. Currently I am unemployed, a stay at home mom to newborn twins, and my husband is receiving workers comp after a work injury, and waiting on a second surgery coming soon. My uncle offered a one time lump sum of $2500, but they came back refusing, saying they will not take less than $7500. Money is tight as we are used to my husbands full paycheck plus overtime he normally works, and I have had to go on food stamps and looking into heating assistance. I quite literally cannot afford a monthly payment to them. What do I do? Can they garnish his workers comp checks? Can they seize our only vehicle? Court is on December 12th and I’m not sure what to do.

Location: West Virginia, but the loan came from Massachusetts originally. We have since moved.
